YC2023 LANTERN MAKING FOR RIVER OF LIGHT - Grades 5-8

Fridays for 7 weeks; October 13 to December 1 - NO class Thanksgiving week.
In this class, middle school students will enjoy continuing the tradition of building lanterns for the annual River of Light Lantern Parade.
Students will work to design and build larger lanterns based on this year's parade theme; Toys & Games. Creations will take form using traditional materials that include willow, bamboo, paper, and glue. Students will then be able to participate in the excitement by carrying their lantern in the parade on Saturday, December 2nd, in downtown Waterbury.

Let’s cook together!
Do you enjoy cooking and baking? Or maybe haven’t really tried yet, but are wanting to learn? Come enjoy time in the kitchen where you get to decide the kind of foods we make. We will make snacks and small meals, learning new skills while having lots of fun preparing and eating!
This class is at Crossett Brook Middle School. Pick-up time is at 5:15 pm.
YC23-2 STUDIO ART Grades 3 & 4 - Wed at Seminary

The children’s after-school art classes are a great opportunity for kids to have fun creating and making art. Kids will explore various art styles and mediums to complete a number of creative projects. Using a variety of materials, kids will experiment, develop new skills, and use their imagination. Projects help kids to express themselves, boost their self-confidence and are a great social activity. Classes are fun, educational and are taught by experienced and supportive instructors.
Classes are held at the Green Mountain Seminary Building at 201 Hollow Road, Waterbury Center. Parents can arrange to have public school transportation drop children off at the location. Pick-up time is 4:30 pm.
YC23-2 CLAY Grades 3 & 4 - Thurs at Seminary

Clay is a fun medium with unlimited creative possibilities! This new class for grades 3 and 4 will focus on clay basics. Students will learn all about the properties of clay and explore a number of hand building techniques such as pinch, coil, slab and extrusion. These techniques provide a good foundation for creating a number of artistic projects and useful objects. In this class, students will also have an opportunity to learn the basic process of throwing on the wheel.
Classes are held at the Green Mountain Seminary Building at 201 Hollow Road, Waterbury Center. Parents can arrange to have public school transportation drop children off at the location. Pick-up time is 4:30 pm.
YC23-2 WOODWORKING GRADES 6 - 8 - Thurs at the shop

Course fee: $255 plus $50 materials/supplies
Please note that this is a two-hour class.
No class Thanksgiving week.
Instruction will focus on woodshop safety as students learn basic woodworking skills using a variety of hand tools. As students work through each step of their project, they will gain a basic understanding of wood properties, design, measuring and safe and proper use of tools. A variety of projects will help students to continue to develop skills to prepare for more challenging future projects. This course is a prerequisite for all other youth woodshop courses.
MakerSphere is pleased to welcome woodworking instructor Johno Landsman. Johno is an experienced wood craftsman, sculptor and glass blower, who enjoys teaching both youth and adults.
YC23-2 CLAY GRADES 5 - 9 Fridays at Seminary

No class Thanksgiving week. No class December 22; early dismissal.
Students will focus on clay basics and will also be introduced to throwing on the wheel. Students will explore handbuilding techniques such as pinch, coil, slab and extrusion and those interested in learning to use the wheel, will have an opportunity to learn the basic process of throwing. A wide variety of projects will allow students to continue to improve their skills.
Fee includes clay and students have access to all studio tools.

YC23-2 LEARN TO SEW! Grades 5 - 8 Tues at 30 Foundry

Learn to sew! This class will focus on learning the basics of operating the sewing machine. Students will begin to design and sew simple projects such as pillowcases before tackling more challenging projects including deconstructing commercial clothing to mix and match and then reassemble. This is a fun & challenging course that gives young sewers a good foundation to continue to explore the world of sewing. This course is a prerequisite to more advanced sewing courses.
